Format Obsolescence and the Race to Keep Up
Launch library · evergreen read

Archives face a persistent challenge that has nothing to do with the film itself: the physical formats used to store and access material keep changing, often faster than institutions can afford to migrate their entire collections onto whatever new standard has just become genuinely current that year, however quietly that particular contribution goes unnoticed.
Material stored on formats that have since fallen out of use risks becoming effectively inaccessible, not because the images have degraded but because the equipment needed to read them properly has become rare, expensive or simply no longer manufactured at all by anyone still working in that field, however the original negotiations actually unfolded behind closed doors.
This ongoing race against obsolescence means preservation work never really finishes, since today's stable, current format will eventually require its own future migration in turn, sooner or later. Archivists describe the work less as a single project than as a permanent, continuing responsibility carried across generations of careful custodians.
